Freedom from Workplace
Bullying
"Nobody can make you feel
inferior
without your
consent"
- Eleanor Roosevelt
Every relationship is a dance, and the
bully-victim dance is no different.
If you repeatedly fall victim to workplace bullies,
the only real solution is to understand the dance and know what you can
do, to stop it.
Bullies can't bully everyone, they target people who they know will do
the dance.
How
do they know? They look for specific behaviour patterns and specific
reactions. This is the meaning of the Eleanor Roosevelt quote above. By
continuing to 'dance' with them, and not changing your patterns, you
are implying that you consent to the dance. There is more to this
quote, and this pattern than meets the eye. Self-awareness is key. Are
you aware of your own patterns of reacting, that keep you in the dance?
You
don't need to think about asking them for permission, or getting them
to change. You only need to focus on yourself. When you change your patterns of
relating, they will have to leave you alone- because you just won't
fit into their 'dance'. They will have no choice.
The key is to identify those patterns in yourself, and change from there. And the exciting thing is this - YOU are the person who has the power to do this, not them.
Changing
the dance...
Imagine
you are both doing a Tango. You have been dancing this
old dance
for years now and you are tired of it. All you need to do is change the
steps and do another dance.
Imagine
you want to do the Jive. It is more lively and modern. So you start to
Jive. Now your 'partner' (the bully) has no choice - they can either do
the Jive with you, go find another partner who will do the Tango with
them, or stop dancing.
It
really is that simple. With personal coaching you can identify the
steps in this relationship dance that you want to change. You can learn
new steps. You can also learn how to set clear boundaries, and handle
difficult situations, so you don't get sucked back in when the bully tries to persuade you to do the
old dance again.
