Drawing upon their combined wealth of experience the authors conduct an intelligent and in-depth exploration into the causes and effects of a bullying culture in the workplace.
Their remarkable insights lead them to recommend practical steps that can be taken in any profession or industry for assessing risk and reducing the harmful effects. This book is an essential starting point for anyone attempting to understand how bullying cultures form among groups and in workplaces, what structures support them and what strategies are effective in addressing the issues and effecting lasting change.

Aggression, bullying, harassment and violence are increasingly common within the National Health Service (NHS). Based on pioneering research and the personal stories of midwives, this book examines the bullying culture that permeates every level of the NHS. Bullying behaviours between peers and across the supervisory hierarchy are explored, and the harmful effects of bullying are discussed.

"Crucially, very clear advice about how bullying cultures can be changed for the better is imparted. All NHS staff should read this book. It would be relevant for other businesses too."

Reviews:

"Every manager, educator, clinician and student needs to read this book and examine themselves, their actions and workplace. Reading this book would enable each individual to gain insight and ensure they are part of the solution to the deplorable problem of workplace violence."
- Carolyn Hastie, AUS.

"Thought provoking. ...All NHS staff should read this book. It would be relevant for other businesses too."

"As a member of the profession referred to in this book, I found it almost frighteningly relevant to the experiences of myself and colleagues. Behaviour tolerated for years, now exposed as being unacceptable. The authors describe clearly what is meant by the term bullying as many people are unaware that this in fact is what they are experiencing. Crucially, very clear advice about how bullying cultures can be changed for the better is imparted. All NHS staff should read this book. It would be relevant for other businesses too."

"Thought provoking book, that all midwives should read, so that they can look at their own behaviour and attitudes with colleagues and women alike. Some people may not realise they are actually a bully until they read this book and recognise some of attitudes in it."

"...this provides a valuable addition to the midwifery literature and is important reading for health and related professionals, nursing, midwifery and health visiting students and those involved in management and education in health care."
-Fiona Dykes, Senior Lecturer/Course Leader MA Midwifery Studies,
University of Central Lancashire, Preston, UK

"The authors have both been midwives and the illustrative cases used are focused on midwifery, some based on a research project carried out by one of them. However, this should not detract from it being a definitive text to read for all those aspiring to or within management, and of interest to workers, in any profession. The information on the causes and effects of bullying practices is written in a very general style and provides a useful broad view of the issues involved, citing some of the psychological theory relating to the bully and the victim.

I particularly liked the final chapter that gives practical pointers on how to deal with the situation as a manager, as someone being bullied or as someone recognising yourself as the bully. ...It is difficult to say who shouldn't read the contents- though perhaps I would not recommend it to new students for fear of putting them off! It comes highly recommended but prepare to be concerned about what you find!"

"A must-read for people in the healthcare field. Provides insights into a world that one thinks of as being untouched by this kind of behavior. Hopefully it will shed light onto the matter of bullying and stop it."

"Every Library and labour suite should have this book placed in the Front. Workplace bullying in NHS is going unnoticed, but NHS should realize that quality of work is affected and would be costing more!"
